Ah, the holiday roll is in full swing and chances are your schedule is chock full of parties, Christmas pageants, cocktails, dinners, and so much more! What on earth will you wear?
The good news is that dressing up is no longer the norm. But you want to look polished and put together. What you need to take you through the season in style is Christmas casual! Here are some of my best tips to rock this comfortable yet polished look with ease!
1/ Start with a great pair of jeans or leggings – This is your foundation, and will dictate the rest of your outfit, so choose wisely. If you’ll be outside and want to wear tall boots, choose skinny jeans or leggings for a long, lean look. Mostly indoors? Rock a bootcut jean or leggings with your booties instead. A dark wash or black jean is perfect for this time of year. Or mix it up and wear red or, dare I say, leopard print!
*when choosing dark solids on bottom, you can get more mileage from them without anyone remembering that you wore your black leggings 3 times last week. They only know you look fabulous!
2/ First Base – Once you have your bottoms, you know what type of top you’ll need. With leggings? Wear a longer top that covers the bum and the crotch area. With jeans? You can opt for a shorter, more fitted top. This is where you want to inject a shot of color, print, lace or other texture. Opt for a sleek base if want to layer on a vest, cape, cardigan or jacket.
*If you want to add a vest or cape, choose a top with interesting sleeve detail – bell sleeves, a smattering of crystals, bows or other adornments. If you want to add a jacket or cardigan, choose a top with long, slim sleeves that won’t add bulk or be difficult to layer over.
3/ Top it off – The secret power of the third layer is that it adds warmth while adding polish and style to your look. If your first base is a solid top, add in a layer that has an animal print, a fuzzy texture or brings in a chic plaid. Your third layer should pull everything together and make you feel like a million bucks!
*Choose your third layer wisely, avoiding anything that adds too much bulk. Your outer layer can be a great way to camouflage a few extra pounds while creating a sleek silhouette.
4/ Beyond Red and Black – While many of our clients gravitate towards red and black this time of year, thin, outside the box. You can look gorgeous in a mauve top with a gray faux fur vest, accented with a metallic belt. Or rock a deep green or purple blouse with a shearling jacket. Or choose neutrals and rock ivory and gold or black and tan, especially if you’re a blonde.
*Beware the color combinations you choose. Not every color looks good with black on YOU. Don’t be afraid to branch out and try new colors. Ask yourself, Do I love it on me? If you’re not sure, the answer is NO!
5/ Shine On – Whatever your color scheme, one key to a Christmas casual look is sparkle. It’s what can elevate the simple to the special, and make a basic outfit go beyond! Add in something that brings light to your face – faceted earrings or a necklace, a scarf with metallic threads, or a liquid leather jacket with a metallic sheen. It not only lights you up, it knocks years off your face!
*Don’t overdo it with the sparkle. Too many and it’s overkill. Moderation is key, but make it have an impact! Choose earrings and a necklace (maybe add in a bracelet), OR a scarf and earrings. You don’t need too much around your face or it becomes distracting. And be sure your accessories RELATE, (but they don’t have to MATCH).
