Reflections on 10 Years as a Style Coach

When I was about 5 years old, I had my first experience with how clothing made me feel.  My mom had made a dress for me and, even though it was bordering on too small, she wanted me to wear it one last time.  All I knew was that it did not make me feel good at all, and there was no way I was leaving the house in it.  So I took matters into my own hands and did the only thing I knew to do – I ripped that dress right down the front.

In 2003, I gave birth to my first child, Ivy.  After struggling with my weight and my body image for nearly 35 years, as I held my daughter in my arms I knew I wanted to set a better example for her.  So I started with gratitude.  Started to forgive myself.  And slowly began to love ME.

In 2005, as I was pregnant with my second child, Dylan, I decided to create a resource for moms.  I was feeling disconnected from the world, feeling out of the groove of style and feeling anything but myself.  As I looked around to find no other online resources for busy moms to help them get their style back, I created my blog, One Chic Mama to share my own experiences and to connect with others.

In 2008, despite the recession, I felt the calling.  I knew there was something more than blogging.  I considered the idea of style coaching, but immediately dismissed it.  Then when 2 friends called soon thereafter to ask me if I could help them in their closet, I took it as a sign and my style coaching practice was born!

I read everything I could, trained to do color, face shape and body type analysis, and immersed myself in the world of image consulting/style coaching.  My first clients were wonderfully patient with me, as I guided them through the experience.  As I became more confident in myself and what I was teaching, I could see there was so much more that clients wanted to know.  Like their style, for one.  So many clients told me they didn’t know what their style was; they had lost their style; or they just never had a style to begin with.  I didn’t believe this for a second!  I know that all women possess a style that is unique to them and I wanted to find a way to help them discover what it is.

In 2010 I created my proprietary StyleFidner ID® System.  Designed as an assessment, it was so wonderful to have my first clients who took it have big a-ha’s around putting their style into words.  Some were almost giddy to find out they were “Classic/Natural, Contemporary” or “Sporty/Romantic, Whimsical” and to learn what the missing element in their style was.  Many women weren’t too far off with their first style word, but the magic really came in finding out the secondary and supporting words.  Those aren’t as obvious, and you have to dig a little deeper, but once those are present, my clients were feeling more confident, more polished and more importantly, more themselves!

My journey to empower women through personal style took a big turn in May of 2015, when my husband, Jim, and I  opened StyleFinder Boutique on Falls of Neuse Rd. in a destination location.  I was with much excitement that we opened our doors, sharing our dream with friends, family and clients.  A year and a half later we realized it was time to make a move to a more visible location, and in July of 2017 we moved into North Hills.  Since then we have been able to help so many more women find their style and feel good about themselves through our personal style services, our workshops and just through working with our Stylistas who are trained in our own unique system.

My journey over the past 10 years has had many twists and turns and I am grateful every single day to be able to get up and make a difference for women.  I have struggled myself with my confidence, body image and my own style, and to be able to help women get out of that struggle and walk into a room feeling confident, relaxed and sexy is truly a dream come true!  I’ve had clients who have gotten back into the dating game, changed jobs, and stepped into bigger things because they felt more confident about who they were.  I’ve had clients walk in feeling old and frumpy, and walk out feeling beautiful!  And that’s what it’s all about.  We want to help more women feel beautiful every.single.day.  That’s what we call the Style Revolution!

Come join us and help us celebrate the Style Revolution this coming weekend with as we raise a toast to all the amazing women we have worked with.  We’ll see you soon!
