What to Wear for Thanksgiving

What to Wear for Thanksgiving

In just 2 short days it’ll be here.  You’ve been busy planning the perfect menu, managing travel plans, and RSVPs and making one last run to the store for a forgotten ingredient.  But have you thought about what you’re going to wear on Thanksgiving?

Years ago, before I had a family of my own and the only person I had to worry about was myself, I used to spend a lot of time ‘playing’ with my clothes.  I’d spend time coordinating the perfect outfit, strategizing about accessories and even spicing things up by deciding to make something at the 11th hour (back in my dressmaker days) to wear for the big day.  I had time to burn and I was able to stay up much later than my 10 pm bedtime these days.  Back then any holiday was an opportunity for a new outfit and I couldn’t wait to wear what I had envisioned.

These days most of us don’t have the luxury of having time to spend planning our outfit for Thanksgiving.  So I’m here to help.  I’ve spent many hours in my closet, and the closets of my clients, and I have a few tips to share that can help make this your most effortlessly fashionable (and comfortable) Thanksgiving yet!

1/ Knit Wit –

It’s a day of gratitude, food, family and fun.  And what’s more perfect for lounging around after too much pumpkin pie than comfortable, stretch-y knits.  But before you’re tempted to grab your yoga pants and a baggy top, think again.  Let’s inject a little style into the day.  A simple knit tunic and leggings outfit can be so much better, and leave you feeling polished and put together, while able to move.  Perfect for a road trip to Grandma’s house! (Tunic, leggings, ISLE)

2/ In the Jeans –

Let’s face it.  It’s hard to beat a great pair of jeans this time of year.  You can dress them up as much – or as little – as you like.  Choose a pair that is slimming and that fits you well.  You do NOT want to wear anything that is binding or gives you a muffin to on your way TO dinner.  Going home is another story.  Add in a simple sweater, a vest to add warmth (and camouflage), a great necklace, some cute booties and you’re set! (Sweater, Nic & Zoe, Jeans, NYDJ)

3/ Upscale Casual #1 –

If you like to look a bit more polished than leggings or jeans, try a pair of slim fitting modern-fit pants.  Pull-on with an elastic waist, they are slimming while giving you plenty of room for another biscuit!  Pair them with a long blouse in a chic print.  Add a wrap for an extra layer, and be sure to wear great earrings!  Wedges, boots or flats complete the look. (Pants, Clara Sunwoo; Blouse, Kay Celine; wrap, Jones New York)

4/ Upscale Casual #2 –

Print pants can be very camouflaging, keeping you looking your best!  Top them off with a darker sweater, a great necklace, and a long scarf to create a slimming silhouette.  (Sweater, Project; Pants, Lisette)

5/ Dress it Up

Sometimes you need something a little dressier on Thanksgiving.   A simple sheath dress and a Chanel-inspired jacket are perfect for the occasion.  The sheath dress is slimming without binding at the waist and the jacket can be worn on or off if you get warm.  (Dress, Donna Morgan; Jacket, Nic & Zoe)

Use these ideas as inspiration to get into your closet and pull together something wonderful that makes you feel good while looking good too!  Your goal is to be comfortable enough that you enjoy the day, while looking polished and put together.  Happy Thanksgiving! <3

Follow these easy tips to create your perfect Thanksgiving outfit in seconds flat:

1/ Shoes First:

While this may seem counterintuitive, hear me out.  I do this a lot and it really makes thing easy.  Decide what shoes you want to wear (or boots, booties, etc).  If you’ll be lounging indoors all day, it doesn’t really make sense to wear your knee-high riding boots.  Choose something that is ideal for what you’ll be doing that day and plan around that.  Road trip to Nana’s?  Comfortable slip on may be just the thing.
