Are Your Jeans Making You Look Fat?

woman-ill-fitting-jeansA great fitting pair of jeans can be a wardrobe staple, but an ill-fitting pair can be a complete wardrobe killer, making you look lumpy, dumpy and frumpy!  And, no, my dear, your size is not the issue here.  The problem lies with your jeans!

Last week I was getting my Starbucks fix when I noticed the woman in front of me.  She was well put together and had on killer shoes.  Her jeans, though, wrecked her entire look.  They were baggy, yet too tight in the waist, making her look much bigger than she was.  All I could think about was how great a pair of Beija Flor Audrey’s would hug her curves in all the right places and visually take off pounds from her look.  What she needed was a ‘mom jeans makeover’!

Do you have jeans in your closet that you’ve had for years?  Instead of pulling them on and heading out the door, take time to really look at yourself in the mirror.  Do they hit you at a place that creates a muffin top?  Are the legs so tight they’re pulling at the backs of your thighs?  Are they baggy and saggy?  Are they full of holes in all the wrong places?  Do you just feel frumpy in them?  If you answered YES to any of these, then ditch them, stat, and grab yourself a brand spanking new pair.

Finding the perfect-fitting pair of jeans can be tricky.  Follow these 5 steps and you’ll discover how easy getting the perfect pair of jeans can be.

1/Assess – Take note of your shape.  Are you a little curvy, or a lot curvy?  Do you have long lets?  Are you petite?  Do you have a little extra around the middle?  Without any judgment, taking note of your shape will help you to understand exactly what your needs are, helping you to know where to start.
Note:  Many brands have a wide array of styles designed for different needs.  With everything from built-in tummy control panels, butt-lifting inserts, different rises and innovative fabrics that can make you look (and feel) pounds thinner, it’s pretty certain there is a solution for your needs. 

2/ Do Your Homework – No, it may not be the fun part, but taking time to do a little research will help you eliminate those brands and styles that are not right, and zero in on the pair that will fit you like a glove.  Ask friends who have a similar shape as you for recommendations.  Get online.  Take a social media poll.  Become familiar with brands and styles and the differences in how they fit.  Whatever it takes to find what you need!

3/ Fit – Getting the right fit is key.  These days jeans are not an inexpensive purchase, and you want to be sure to get your money’s worth.  You will not wear an uncomfortable pair of jeans for long, so don’t even think about tolerating something that is so-so.  Go for amazing!  No gapping at the waist, riding up in the rise or bagginess in the thighs.  If your skinny jean is too tight in the calf, skip it.  Keep trying on until you get it right. If you come close to perfect but need a little help, a great tailor can work wonders.  And by all means, don’t buy a pair that gives you a muffin top!  Find a rise that is slimming and keeps everything in place.
Note: When trying on your jeans, sit, stand, squat and move around to be sure they move with you and don’t bind.  Look at the rear view.  Ask about shrinkage.  And when you find the pair that fits you like a glove, buy two! 

4/ Silhouette – Knowing what silhouette is right for you is essential.  Your goal is to create balance and the truth is one style does not fit all.  Just because a particular style is trendy does NOT mean it’s right for you.  Don’t be afraid to try new styles, however, if it’s not right don’t give in.  Skinny jeans have been the most popular choice, but are not always right for everyone.  If you want to wear skinny jeans but are a bit curvy, wear a longer top or jacket that comes below hips, or wear your skinny jeans with boots to create balance.  If you’re fuller through the hips and/or the bust, a bootcut will be a better style to balance you out.  Trouser jeans can work well on many body types.  Steer clear of full-on flares if you’re above a ‘certain age’ as they are better for the younger set.
If you’re fuller through the booty, keep your pockets plain and simple.  If you’d like to amp up that area, choose pockets with embellishments to make you appear fuller.  Choose back pockets that are in proportion with your bum for best effect.

5/ Style – The style of your jeans makes a statement, so be clear they are right for you.  If you’re buying a great pair of go-to investment jeans, opt for a dark wash classic cut that will last you for years to come.  Once you have those in your wardrobe, you have room to play around with trendier styles, including distressing, different washes, decorative stitching or embellishments.  With everything from pull-on to textured and distressed denim, anything goes.  Just make sure the look is in line with your own personal style.
